The Megger HUMMINGBIRD is a high-power audio frequency generator for demanding subsea power cable applications. It is designed for long HV and EHV AC cables, as well as HVDC interconnectors.
The HUMMINGBIRD injects a controlled, low-frequency modulated current into the cable conductor. The cable shield provides the return path. This creates a magnetic field that subsea receiver systems can detect.
As a result, engineers can track subsea cables and pinpoint low-resistance main insulation faults. The system works with ROV-mounted subsea equipment such as the Megger Magtrack receiver.
The HUMMINGBIRD delivers up to 40 kW output power and 100 A output current. Its frequency range spans 10 to 40 Hz, with adjustments in 1 Hz steps. Furthermore, the generator provides up to 400 V output voltage.
Operation remains straightforward through the 23 cm industrial-grade TFT touchscreen. Users can set voltage, current and frequency independently through the simplified interface.
The generator also maintains harmonic distortion below 3% across its frequency range. Its heavy-duty design supports demanding specialist cable applications.
